  In default case, captions are written to captions.yaml file, but not to the actual
  image files (for speed, and permissions complexity). To get the captions into the 
  image files, you then need to run mksub or mkyear from the command line.

  mksub has no apparent visual effect, unless the captions include |left| or |right|
  (including the pipe symbols), which:
    - causes the base image to be rotated (~/bin/lrotate or ~/bin/rrotate)
    - re-creates half and thumb
    - updates the caption to not include the command
  non-pete types can use these commands but they will only take effect when
  pete runs the above commands.
